Dear Fellow Sligo Creek Families,
Welcome to February! President's day was first celebrated in 1800, the year after George Washington's death, to commemorate his birthday. In 1885 Congress officially established it as a day of celebration and since that time, we have come to celebrate the accomplishments and service of all our presidents. In honor of President's day, we wanted to share a few things some of these leaders have said about education:
The best means of forming a manly, virtuous, and happy people will be found in the right education of youth. Without this foundation, every other means, in my opinion, must fail. ~George Washington, 1st President
It is good to realize that if love and peace can prevail on earth, and if we can teach our children to honor nature’s gifts, the joys and beauties of the outdoors will be here forever. ~Jimmy Carter, 39th President
Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education. ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President
Educate and inform the whole mass of people. They are the only sure reliance for our preservation of liberty. Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President
Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in. Abraham Lincoln, 16th President
Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation. ~John F. Kennedy, 35th President
