The PTA has launched our sixth Sligo Creek Geography Bowl (GeoBowl) for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. The goal of this optional program is for kids to have fun learning about geography. The focus this year is Asia and Europe.
Here's how it works:
Each 3-5th grader will be given their own GeoBowl Packet. The packet contains a series of maps, text and questions. They are totally self-contained, meaning that all of the questions can be answered using the included maps and text. The packet is essentially optional homework to be completed over the following weeks and turned in by January 11th.
Once the packets are turned in, they are corrected (not graded), and returned to the students so that they can use them to study for the quiz and the Bowl. A small prize will be given to each student who completes the packet.
A Geography quiz will be administered later in January. Quiz material will come from solely from the packet. The top performers on the quiz will be awarded a spot on a Geo Bowl team. The teams will then meet to study thru the month of February in preparation for a GeoBowl assembly on March 1st.
Here's how you can help:
- Make sure they have their name and teacher's name on the packet cover.
- Encourage them to work on completing the packet, either individually, with a family member, or with a friend. There's a lot of information so encourage completing it in stages. If a question is unclear students are free to skip that question.
- Volunteer to correct packets -- we can use all the help we can get. Please email email@example.com if you can take a few packets home, starting January 2nd to correct. Older kids can also get SSL hours for correcting packets.
Note 3rd Grade French Immersion: Students will receive both a French and English packet (French packets will be distributed next week). Information in each of the packets is the same. Students can complete either, however their GeoBowl will be held in French.
