Seeking Lunch and Recess Volunteers

We've received the go-ahead to bring back Lunch and Recess Volunteers, starting next week!

If you've never set foot in Sligo Creek Elementary School--for many kindergarten, first, and even second-grade families, this is the pandemic-driven reality--here's an excellent chance to get to know your student's classmates while providing valuable support to our lunch and recess aides during this fun (and chaotic!) part of the school day. We'd love to have two adults present per lunch and recess shift; sign up with a friend to make it even more enjoyable!

You *must* have your training and proof of vaccination submitted before you’ll be approved to come in. Directions for finding the MCPS-required training are on the PTA's website here: https://scespta.membershiptoolkit.com/Volunteer.

Once you've taken the training and uploaded proof of vaccination, please fill out this Google form that Ms. Nesmith put together, indicating your volunteering preferences.

Let Emily Bleimund (ebleimund@gmail.com), PTA Wellness Committee Chair,  know if she can include you in a Google Group for SCES lunch/recess volunteers, where we'll get everyone organized and get started soon!

We can't wait to see you in the cafeteria and on the playground!

Pi Day Love for SCES Staff!

Today is Pi Day and your donations of tasty pies are roundly endorsed ("cosigned") by staff. ("What’s wrong with the equation 'Pi r squared?' Answer: Pi are round. Cake are square.")

Thanks for celebrating the mathematical constant Pi and for constantly showing up for our staff with your "stock the lounge" goodies.

Check out the sign-up sheet here to contribute in the coming weeks:

https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/4090949a5ad2fa3f58-stock

Drop off info is in the sign-up, or reach out to Katie Ryan (katevdk@gmail.com) or Tracie Siddiqui (traciesiddiqui@gmail.com) to coordinate an alternative.

The record for reciting the most number of decimal places of Pi was achieved by Rajveer Meena at VIT University, Vellore, India in 2015. He was able to recite 70,000 decimal places. To maintain the sanctity of the record, Rajveer wore a blindfold throughout the duration of his recall, which took an astonishing 10 hours!

Grocery Gift Card Collection - Thank You!

Two weeks ago, we asked for help providing SCES families facing food insecurity with the resources they need prior to Spring Break. We mentioned the need to collect 70 grocery gift cards by Friday, April 1. As of today, we have over 80 cards to distribute.

Thank you for contributing in so many ways to our community!

If you or your family can benefit from a gift card, please contact Ms. Check at Jessica_Check@mcpsmd.org or Mme. Johnston at Jeanne_K_Johnston@mcpsmd.org.

Assistance for Friendly Garden Apartment Families

Thank you SO much, everyone who sent in donations for the families affected by the gas explosion disaster at Friendly Garden Apartments on Laytonsville Road. I wasn't expecting to deliver much given that there was just a 2-day turnaround to get the first load of toiletries and clothes to the 20 students at Silver Creek MS displaced by the fire. I should have known--I showed up to school on Thursday and discovered a load of donations that required multiple trips to the car! This community of caring never lets our neighbors down. Here's a quick photo I snapped of the donations. Again, heartfelt thanks from our neighbors for your kindness.

Seeking PTA Board Member Nominations

We have a number of openings on the SCES PTA board for the 2022-23 School Year, including President, Vice-President, and Treasurer.

Please see the PTA website for job descriptions:
