Three PTA activities in one! Join Us for Not-Your-Typical PTA Meeting Tuesday, Dec. 5 - SCES Gym

Here's our line-up.

5:30 - 6:30 PM:   A pre-meeting with pizza sponsored by the SCES antiracism committee. We'll construct pieces of a banned book display* to be featured alongside the Scholastic Book Fair (taking place Dec. 11-15) and read a few of the stories together ("When Wilma Rudolph Played Basketball" "Milo's Museum" "Fry Bread" and "Front Desk" are possibilities). Please RSVP here if you plan to attend so that we can ensure plenty of pizza for all.

*To be clear, our media center has books representative of a wide range of people in frequent rotation. We're very lucky; Ms. Elkins even offered to put together a display in our hallway showing the books available in our media center from the banned list. We're hosting the popup display to supplement the Scholastic Book Fair as an educational moment spurred by a decision Scholastic made earlier this year (and has since reversed) to create a separate, optional bookshelf of titles addressing Black and Latino history, including the biographies of Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, boxing legend Muhammad Ali and NBA superstar LeBron James. These books will absolutely be available at our book fair in December, but schools in some parts of our nation are being forced to opt out of receiving these titles.

6:30 - 7:30 PM:
A West African dance workshop and performance by artist Kalon Hayward. This event is intended for everyone! Your family won't want to miss this interactive activity for students and grownups alike.

7:30 - 8:30 PM:
PTA business, such as voting on the amended budget. We'll keep it as brief as we can! KidsCo will provide childcare for this portion of the evening (from 7:30-8:45 PM in the cafeteria). Please RSVP so that we can give KidsCo an accurate count of students attending.

Plan to join us at school on Tuesday, Dec. 5 for an evening of entertainment, education, and a smidge of business. We look forward to having lots of fun together!

SCES Scholastic Book Fair 2023!

The Book Fair will take place on December 11-15 with a night on Dec 12th as well.

Our goal is to make sure all students can get books and to provide a huge selection that celebrates diversity and inclusion. More details to follow!

The PTA is looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of the book fair, from setting up to take down, running registers and helping students select books.  Please sign up here to join!

SSL hours will also be offered to 6th grader or above to help out. Please email Book Fair Chair Meghan Conaghan, bookfair@scespta.org to find out more.

A Recap on Family Reading Night, Nov. 16

Family Reading Night was a huge success! On November 16th, our main hallway and a few classrooms transformed into a magical story time for kids and their families! Attendees listened to stories read by students from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts who dressed in the characters of their book. Students also made crafts, enjoyed some fun snacks and spent quality time reading with friends and family.

A big thank you tp Dawn N, Justin P, for a super successful event. And a special thank you to students from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts for their participation.

SCES Winter Concert, Dec. 14th

The Sligo Creek Winter Concert for Students, Parents and Staff will be held on Thursday, December 14 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

The concert will feature the Fourth and Fifth Grade Chorus, the Orff Ensemble and the Dance Teams! This evening performance will be held in the Gymnasium.
