Major platforms you need an account for with MCPS for elementary school

1. ParentVUE: how to access grades and a route for emailing teachers.  It is also vital that you have the correct email address with ParentVUE so the school can reach you with communications, which come from NoReply Synergy or Blackboard.

2. Canvas/MyMCPSClassroom — separate from ParentVUE, but you must access it through your ParentVUE account. It gives alerts about assignments and grades — and you can see a bit more into what’s due in each classroom. This is for those who want a deeper dive into what is going on for their students and perhaps an earlier heads up about how things are going in the classroom.

3.AlertMCPS: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/emergency/alertmcps.aspx  This provides information about school closures or other emergencies.

4. School Cash Online: https://www.schoolcashonline.com — all school financial obligations outside of cafeteria meals.

5. My School Bucks — https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/getmain?requestAction=home  This year, meals (lunch and breakfast) will not be universally free.  If you are not a FARMS family (free or reduced price meals based on economic circumstances), and your student wants to buy lunch in school, they will need a mybucks account with money in it.

Outdoor Classroom Community Day - Sept. 9th, 10-12PM

Welcome back to SCES and the start of a new school year. The Outdoor Classroom in the courtyard shared between Sligo Creek Elementary School (SCES) and Silver Spring International Middle School (SSIMS) is a unique feature used for outdoor learning experiences at both schools. There are garden beds for vegetables, a pollinator meadow, a stage and classroom seating with more areas in progress.  The Outdoor Classroom Coordinator, a stipended position funded through the Sligo Creek Education Foundation, is organizing a work day to refresh the Outdoor Classroom for the school year.  This will include weeding, mulching and creating additional flower beds.  We are looking for volunteers to help with these tasks.  We ask that families volunteer together, this is not a student drop off event.  Middle School students can earn SSL hours.

When: Saturday, September 9 from 10AM - 12PM

Where: enter the Outdoor Classroom from the SCES side near the cafeteria.  Parking is available in SCES parking spaces.

Please RSVP the Outdoor Classroom Coordinator Mitch Greene at  The.Outdoor.Classroom.20910@gmail.com.  Future work days will be planned as needed to help continue growing the Outdoor Classroom for student use.

Fall 2023 Session Registration is now open for the Sligo Creek Striders!

Would your child enjoy running with friends after school?

The PTA-sponsored Sligo Creek Striders after-school run club will:

  • Introduce students to running as a lifelong form of exercise with a focus on participation and self improvement.
  • Improve social emotional skills and provide opportunities to socialize and bond with other young runners.

The Sligo Creek Striders are gender and ability inclusive for grades K-5.

We will meet Mondays from 4-5pm at the SSIMS school track

The Fall Session will run from Monday September 11th until November 6th. *Note there will be no practice September 24th or October 9th due to no school those days.

Cost for the 7 week run club will be $35 and will include a t-shirt and an end of season run celebration. Please do not pay until you receive confirmation of your child's spot in the club.

If your child is interested you can sign up here. Spots are limited based on the number of coaches.

We are also recruiting coaches. Can you help? Prior experience running and coaching is NOT necessary! Please email sligocreekstriders@gmail.com with any questions.

Stock the Staff Lounge

The staff appreciation committee will stock the staff lounge every Monday.  Sign-up for slots of your choosing on the SignUp Genius. Items can be dropped off or mailed Claire Darby's house. Please message her for her address. (Facebook messenger, or cell/email contact is available on the SignupGenius.)

You can also order off our Amazon wish list and have items sent to her house if that's easier. Please still sign up on the sign up genius as well so others can see what is covered!
