World Culture Day is coming up March 24

Our  school's annual World Culture Day event is coming up on Friday, March 24. World Culture Day (WCD) is a parent led and PTA supported schoolwide that we have organized since 2016. WCD showcases the different countries represented in our school community and introduces students to different cultural practices with the goal of nurturing understanding, curiosity, tolerance, respect for each other and for people who come from different countries and/or have different cultural practices than our own.

Embassy Partners for this year's WCD include the following nations:

  • The Republic of Cameroon
  • The Republic of Indonesia
  • The Republic of Madagascar
  • The Republic of Korea
  • Japan

WCD depends on parent and family volunteers to make it a success. Volunteer sessions run 9-12 and 12-4 and we'd love to get two or more additional volunteers for each session. Check out volunteering opportunities and sign up to lend a hand via this SignUp Genius. Thank You!

Thank you to Ooh La La Bakery for sponsoring WCD!

Sligo Creek Striders (Run Club) Spring Session Registration is now open!

Would your child enjoy running with friends after school?

The PTA-sponsored Sligo Creek Striders after-school run club will:

  • Introduce students to running as a lifelong form of exercise with a focus on participation and self improvement.

  • Improve social emotional skills and provide opportunities to socialize and bond with other young runners.

The Sligo Creek Striders are gender and ability inclusive for grades K-5.

We will meet Mondays from 4-5pm at the school track.

The Spring Session will run from Monday March 20th until May 22nd. *Note there will be no practice April 3rd or 10th due to spring break.

Cost for the 8 week run club will be $35 and will include a t-shirt and an end of season celebration.

If your child is interested you can sign up here. Spots are limited based on the number of coaches.

We are also recruiting coaches. Can you help? Prior experience running and coaching is NOT necessary! Please email sligocreekstriders@gmail.com with any questions.

It's PTA Recruitment Time!!

We're looking for SCES community members who want to be on a search committee (about three people) to help recruit and nominate leaders to serve on the PTA Board next year.  We have many exciting opportunities to discuss at the next PTA meeting on Wednesday April 12 (scheduled for Wednesday so as not to conflict with middle school PTSA meetings, which generally take place the second Tuesday of each month. Typically, elementary school PTAs meet on the first Tuesday of the month--but that will fall during spring break), and you'll hear from us at other upcoming events.  If you're interested in being on this search committee, or in nominating yourself or someone you know for a position on the board, please e-mail president@scespta.org. Being a Co-Chair and sharing the position is also always an option. Open positions for 2023-2024 include:

  • PTA Co-President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • VP of Academics (or co-VPs)
  • Student Assistance Coordinator
  • Antiracism Committee Chair (or co-Chairs)
  • Staff Appreciation Committee Chair (or co-Chairs)
  • Wellness Committee Chair (or co-Chairs)

The VP of Academics position is critical to our ability to host the GeoBowl, World Culture Day (WCD) and the STEAM Science Fair. These are signature events for our school and it would be incredibly sad to lose any of them due to lack of volunteers. Please email Jennifer Meyer and Farah Nageer Kanthor at academics@scespta.org with your ideas/thoughts/questions. If you join Jennifer and Farah in the planning of WCD or the Science Fair now, you'll be on your way to feeling ready for next year! This is a great position to do as a team, so grab a buddy and submit your names to the board.

The Secretary position is important for us to be a fully-functioning PTA. Please email Laura Lunardi at secretary@scespta.org with questions.

Brenna would LOVE a co-president for the coming school year. It will be her final year on the board after serving for three years as Communications VP and a year as president. The PTA would be so grateful for your fresh ideas and energy as we look toward an incredible 23-24 school year! This would also create some continuity moving forward for future boards. Please contact Brenna at president@scespta.org (or message 301-606-3446) with any questions about serving on a committee or the PTA board.

Support Needed for SCES Families

With spring break approaching, our community traditionally collects grocery gift cards to support families facing food insecurity. Particularly when students are away from school and the breakfast and lunch options provided by our cafeteria, there is an added need for this support.

The PTA is limited to gift card purchases of $25 per individual, which only takes us so far. Please consider purchasing a gift card to Giant, Aldi or Safeway for $25, $35, $50 or more as you're able. Ms. Jeanne Johnston will collect these gift cards at school. Your student can hand them directly to Ms. Johnston or give them to Ms. Joseph or Ms. Brooks in the front office, and they will be sure the gift cards reach the right person.

If electronic donations are more convenient for you, please Venmo, Zelle or Paypal our student assistance coordinator Farah Nageer Kanthor (whose husband Jeremy Kanthor, our Vice President, has offered to collect the funds) at:

Venmo: @Jeremy-kanthor

PayPal: jtkantho@hotmail.com

Zelle: 301-801-4742

Please be sure to note that the donation is for SCES grocery gift cards.

Farah will use all funds collected to purchase grocery gift cards for SCES families in need, including several refugee families and those impacted by the recent apartment fire in downtown Silver Spring. In total, we're hoping to offer some support to 25-30 students. Our goal is to collect $100 in grocery cards for each of these students, but anything we can do will be helpful.

Thank you so much for your caring and support.

The SCES Book Share needs your children's books!

Each June, all SCES students get to pick out and take home books to read over the summer (and keep). We rely on community donations to fill our shelves, and are excited to receive your gently used children's books, in both English and French. No religious books please, including books about religious holidays like Christmas, and no adult or young adult books. You can contact Carrie Callaghan at carrie468@yahoo.com for her address near SCES to drop off at any time, or wait until May when we set out donation boxes at the school. We particularly need French books for advanced readers.

We would love to have you Volunteer for Lunch/Recess

School operations are greatly assisted by the volunteer efforts of parents and guardians during the school day. Support for lunch, recess, and the main office is always appreciated. If you would like to volunteer, please email Ms. Brooks at Lisa_L_Brooks@mcpsmd.org a few days in advance if you're able, but definitely the day of, and let her know what time you are planning on arriving.  Please make sure to sign in at the main office. Child abuse and neglect training is required and can be conducted online at https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/childabuseandneglect/#Volunteer. ontgomeryschoolsmd.org/childabuseandneglect/#Volunteer.
