MLK Toiletries Drive at SCES

In service of MLK Month we invite you and your child/children to participate in a toiletries drive at SCES sponsored by the NAACP/PTA.  Please donate new items such as socks, toiletries, deodorant, and bathroom items. These will all be donated to Shepherd's Table.  You can find out more about this organization at https://www.shepherdstable.org/.


Items will be collected: January 17- January 27

There will be boxes in front of the mail office for drop off.

In Person PTA Meeting at 7pm in Media Center

Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, February 7 at 7 PM for our next in-person PTA Meeting. We'll gather in the school media center. 

 

We truly hope as many of you as possible can join us! Let's pack the media center (child care will be provided*). This meeting is going to be inspiring! We'll hear about some of the essential steps MCPS in general and specifically, Sligo Creek Elementary School, are taking to build strong communities and leaders within our schools. 

 

We'll talk with Dr. Tarik Harris and colleagues who work on the MCPS Restorative Justice (RJ) team. We'll also hear from Ms. Vendemia and Mrs. Wattiez; those who attended our first in-person meeting back in October may recall this dynamic team we're fortunate to have as our school counselors!  Ms. V and Mrs. W will share some of the RJ principals and leadership opportunities lifting up and supporting our SCES students. We'll also discuss the future leadership of the PTA, looking ahead to positions opening up on next year's board and beyond. An overall theme of building and nurturing our dynamic school community--can't wait for you to join us! 

 

We'll send out a complete agenda closer to Feb. 7.

 

*KidsCo will provide child care from 6:45 PM - 8:45 PM for the school-aged children of those attending the meeting. 

 

Looking for Volunteer to help with Student Assistance at SCES

The PTA is looking for a volunteer to work with Farah Nageer and our wonderful guidance counselors to help support our efforts in providing student assistance to families that need extra support.  Our hope is this person would be interested in taking over this role next year as the PTA point person for student assistance (grocery gift cards, school supplies, winter gear). Here's what happening around SCES the next few months!!!

We are excited about the Spring season of academic events. Mark your calendars for GeoBowl on Friday, February 24th.

 

A month later we celebrate World Culture Day 2023. Check out the flyer and Sign Up to present and help to make the event a success.

 

Then, in April we host our 2nd annual STEAM Fair. We are excited about what this year has in store. Check out the flyer and Sign Up to present and volunteer during the event. 

2023 Sligo Creek Elementary GeoBowl!

 The 2023 SCES GeoBowl will be held on February 24!

What is the GeoBowl?  The GeoBowl is a geography quiz team competition for SCES 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.  Students who register to enter the GeoBowl use a study guide to learn about this year’s continent – Africa.  Students will be assigned to grade level teams and they work together to prepare for the competition.  On February 24 the teams will compete together to answer questions in a quiz competition.  It is a great opportunity for students to learn about geography and work as part of a team. 

An answer key to the study guide will be circulated the week of February 6 to ensure students are studying the correct answers.

How can I volunteer to help?  Volunteers are most welcome!  Parents, family members, and other volunteers can organize team study sessions during lunch periods or after school (on Zoom).  We will also need assistance for organizing the GeoBowl on February 24.  Please contact Jeremy Kanthor jtkanthor75@gmail.comif you’re interested in volunteering.

April 20 STEAM Science Fair

Donate your used children's books to SCES's annual Book Share!

Every spring Sligo Creek sends books home with all of our students. These free books are in part donated by the community - we need those books you've finished with! Please contact Carrie Callaghan at carrie468@yahoo.com to drop off children's books at her house, near SCES. In May we will also have donation boxes at the school. 


The Book Share can accept any children's books suitable for elementary school students in English or French. We have a particular need for French books at advanced reading levels. Please:


- No adult books (including adult cookbooks)

- No religious books (including books about holidays like Christmas)

- No board books

Winter coat/gear swap next fall at SCES

If you've begun clearing out the old to make way for new, please keep in mind that come October 2023, we plan to hold the FIRST EVER winter coat/gear swap at Sligo Creek ES. 

 

If you don't have room to store extra coats, boots, snow pants, hats and gloves between now and October, please send a note to Brenna Thibault at 301-606-3446 or email president@scespta.org and she will help arrange to pick your items up and store them in the PTA closet. 

 

If you're able to store your items until fall that's great too--storage in the PTA closet is decent but not infinite. We'll gladly take them at the start of next year to begin organizing for the swap or now, whatever is easiest for you!


Volunteering In SCES

School operations are greatly assisted by the volunteer efforts of parents and guardians during the school day. Support for lunch, recess, and the main office is always appreciated. Please drop in when you can, just make sure to sign in at the main office. Child abuse and neglect training is also required and can be conducted online at https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/childabuseandneglect/#Volunteer. Ms. Nesmith will also host training in January.
