2023 Sligo Creek Elementary GeoBowl!

The 2023 SCES GeoBowl will be held on February 24!

What is the GeoBowl?  The GeoBowl is a geography quiz team competition for SCES 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.  Students who register to enter the GeoBowl use a study guide to learn about this year’s continent – Africa.  Students will be assigned to grade level teams and they work together to prepare for the competition.  On February 24 the teams will compete together to answer questions in a quiz competition.  It is a great opportunity for students to learn about geography and work as part of a team.

The 2023 GeoBowl will be conducted in both French and English.  French Immersion students will receive a French language study guide and all questions and answers will be in French.

How do I register my student?  Please complete this Registration Form to sign up your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade student.  Please register by January 20.

Team assignments will be circulated on January 23rd to everyone who registers.

What information about Africa is included in the GeoBowl?  The Africa Study packets in both French and English are attached allowing students to get an early start on preparation.  Only information in the packet will be included in the GeoBowl quiz and all information in the study packet is fair game.  The French GeoBowl will be conducted entirely in French. Hard copy study guides will be available during the week of January 16 – please request hard copies in the registration form.

An answer key to the study guide will be circulated the week of February 6 to ensure students are studying the correct answers.

How can I volunteer to help?  Volunteers are most welcome!  Parents, family members, and other volunteers can organize team study sessions during lunch periods or after school (on Zoom).  We will also need assistance for organizing the GeoBowl on February 24.  Please contact Jeremy Kanthor jtkanthor75@gmail.com if you’re interested in volunteering.

If you have any questions, please contact Jeremy Kanthor jtkanthor75@gmail.com

Job Posting: Outdoor Classroom Coordinator

We are excited to announce that the Sligo Creek Educational Foundation is hiring an Outdoor Classroom Coordinator to maintain and implement environmental curriculum in the Outdoor Classroom shared between Sligo Creek Elementary School and Silver Spring International Middle School.   The Outdoor Classroom has a history of gardening curriculum for the elementary school students but there is opportunity for the Coordinator to explore other options in the space.  A full position description is attached.  This is a part-time position with flexible hours averaging 10 hrs/week through the end of the 22/23 school year with possibility to continue for the full 23/24 school year.  Working hours are during the school day with occasional evening and weekends.  A stipend will be provided.
No prior work experience is required, but we are looking for someone with a passion for the outdoors and sharing with children. You do not need a child at the schools to be considered. Send letters of interest outlining your ability to perform the goals listed in the description to outdoorclassroom20910@gmail.com. Open until filled. Priority to applicants who apply by January 27, 2023.
Kind Regards,Ilisa Tawney and Shoshanna Sumka
Winter coat/gear swap next fall at SCES

If you've begun clearing out the old to make way for new, please keep in mind that come October 2023, we plan to hold the FIRST EVER winter coat/gear swap at Sligo Creek ES.

If you don't have room to store extra coats, boots, snow pants, hats and gloves between now and October, please send a note to Brenna Thibault at 301-606-3446 or email president@scespta.org and she will help arrange to pick your items up and store them in the PTA closet.

If you're able to store your items until fall that's great too--storage in the PTA closet is decent but not infinite. We'll gladly take them at the start of next year to begin organizing for the swap or now, whatever is easiest for you!
