Sligo Creek Striders (Running Club)

Would your child enjoy running with friends after school? We are starting a PTA sponsored after school run club called the Sligo Creek Striders. It will be gender and ability inclusive for grades K-5 with a minimal cost ($0-35 range, final cost still TBD).

The run club will start this fall; roughly the week of Sept 19 until November 7th (~8 weeks). It will be held two days a week for 1 hour directly after school at the SSIMS track. There will be two coaches per 15 students and ideally each grade level will have their own team; although we may combine some grade levels based on interest. The run club will use the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Kids Run the Nation program/curriculum.

Our goals for the run club are to:

  • Introduce students to walking and running as a lifelong form of exercise with a focus on participation and self improvement.
  • Improve social emotional skills and provide opportunities to socialize and bond with other young runners.

We will learn:

  • Pacing and good running technique

  • Stretching

  • Running safety and injury prevention

  • Goal setting

  • Nutrition and hydration

We are recruiting coaches to start planning teams. Can you help? Prior experience running and coaching is NOT necessary! Please email sligocreekstriders@gmail.com with any questions or to let us know you are interested in coaching, assisting, or your children participating.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from mid-September to mid-October - Montgomery County Public Libraries is running various programs you can find at

Spiritwear

Welcome Back Salamanders!

SCES Spirit Wear sale is running from now through Friday Sept 16th. Has your kiddo outgrown their old shirt?  Are you planning to volunteer (or volunteering someone else in your household?!)  for field trips or the Salamander Stride and need a few adult shirts?  Is your car missing Salamander magnet customization? Youth shirts are $13, adults $15 and magnets $4. Order form here: https://scespta.membershiptoolkit.com/form/m/203661

As in years past the PTA will provide a size small shirt to all incoming Kindergartners and new staff. No need to order for a kindergarten student, but donations welcome to help offset costs.

Shirt delivery will happen to the classrooms in early October, in advance of the Salamander Stride.

P.S.  We do have some old, thicker material shirts (pre-2020) that we will sell at the Back to School Social on Sept 9th for $10.

Helpful Tips

Volunteering In School

If you are interested in volunteering at SCES, MCPS requires you (in most circumstances) to complete certain compliance measures in order to volunteer within the school district. Information regarding those measures can be found at

https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/student-leadership/volunteer.aspx

Grade Level Communications

Many parents/guardians have established grade level Slack groups or similar channels to facilitate communications. A list of those groups can be found here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hqeJhh0YNcJgF0oz3-iEG1gsoSwk8CTqhgcA68vljJg/edit#gid=467678328

Car Circle

We know everyone is eager to efficiently and safely get their kids to school and timely on to work or other appointments. For safety, neighborhood relations, efficiency, and fairness, the following protocols exist for arrival (and dismissal):

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wk-HX-rYmyQvXyyLRuNUrjDOEvvpypsPCf6shuWWows/edit?fbclid=IwAR0OXXP11cxRgpSuDxwg_qgmvwZoMF9S6Tc8djEllD2BE6O3MyNBV_FMfak

Busses

The bus routes for SCES have been posted by MCPS and can be found at:
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/transportation/busroutes/02517bus.pdf

MCPS notes that some bus routes may change. Additionally, some routes may experience service delays due to staffing and the need for multiple runs. Updates regarding delays and uncovered routes will be communicated on a daily basis by schools and available on the MCPS website at https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/

Major platforms you need an account for with MCPS for elementary school

1. ParentVUE: how to access grades and a route for emailing teachers.  It is also vital that you have the correct email address with ParentVUE so the school can reach you with communications, which come from NoReply Synergy or Blackboard.

2. Canvas/MyMCPSClassroom — separate from ParentVUE, but you must access it through your ParentVUE account. It gives alerts about assignments and grades — and you can see a bit more into what’s due in each classroom. This is for those who want a deeper dive into what is going on for their students and perhaps an earlier heads up about how things are going in the classroom.

3.AlertMCPS: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/emergency/alertmcps.aspx  This provides information about school closures or other emergencies.

4. School Cash Online: https://www.schoolcashonline.com — all school financial obligations outside of cafeteria meals.

5. My School Bucks — https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/getmain?requestAction=home  This year, meals (lunch and breakfast) will not be universally free.  If you are not a FARMS family (free or reduced price meals based on economic circumstances), and your student wants to buy lunch in school, they will need a mybucks account with money in it.
