Salamander Stride Update


Getting Ready to Stride?


The Salamander Stride is right around the corner and today is a great day to get your fundraising page setup or hit the trail for a training run (or walk, stroll, ride, or hop)! 

For those of you new to Sligo Creek ES, The Stride is our largest, most important fundraiser of the year. It is typically a fun afternoon spent on our track running laps for pledges, but as we all know this year is a little different! 


This year's 'Stride will be a VIRTUAL EVENT held the week of November 9-13th. 

 

We are only 10% of the way towards our goal of $30,000 as of Friday, Oct. 30.  


These are the current grade level standings:

  • 1st Place- Kindergarten
  • 2nd Place- 4th Grade
  • 3rd Place- 1st Grade
  • 4th Place- 5th Grade
  • 5th Place- 2nd Grade
  • 6th Place- 3rd grade


The first place grade gets a movie afternoon, the classroom in each grade that raises the most gets a choice of virtual field trip, dance party, or virtual scavenger hunt, and the top fundraiser in each grade wins lunch with Mr. Rand or Teacher of their choice!  


Remember if we meet our goal of raising $30,000 Mr. RAND WILL SLIME HIMSELF!

The SCES Virtual Book Fair is open until Thursday, November 5.

Antiracism Book Club—Nov. 9

For our November antiracist book selection we’re reading Caste by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson. She examines the laws and practices that created what she describes as a bipolar, Black and white caste system in the United States. 

Whether you've finished the book, just started reading it, or haven't gotten your hands on it yet and would prefer to listen to a podcast discussion with the author-- we encourage everyone to come and be in community with other SCES parents. 

A couple questions to mull over as you read/listen:

  • Caste and race are not the same thing; what is the difference between the two? 
  • How do casteism and racism support each other?
  • How does caste show up in our school community?
  • How has the book made you think differently about systems of oppression and your own background as a citizen of the US?

Toward an Antiracist SCES Parent Group Meeting—Tuesday, Nov 10 @ 8pm

We aim to be an inclusive group of parents and guardians with many different backgrounds and lived experiences, who are interested in reinvigorating work to identify and dismantle all forms of racism within the Sligo Creek community. This meeting will serve as a space to connect with each other and strategize about the soon-to-be-released school climate survey for all parents/guardians and 3rd-5th graders, as well as several other portions of our group's strategic plan.

We're offering a few different options for pick up. Individual orders will be labeled, and kindergartners receive a size S shirt and need to note their student and teacher name at porch pick up.

Wednesday Nov. 4—Materials Pick-Up

SCES will distribute Quarter 2 curriculum materials on Wednesday, November 4th from 9:30 am - 3:00 pm. 

Guidelines:

  1. French Immersion Pick Up - All French Immersion materials will be picked up in the school car circle.  Please follow the procedures that we have used in the past. 
  2. Academy Pick Up - All Academy Materials will be picked up in the back lot next to our cafeteria. There will be a person guiding traffic. 
  3. Those who are walking will have designated spots in both areas to pick up materials.

Reminders:

  • Have a sign in the car displaying the names and grade levels of the students for whom you are picking up materials. 
  • Stay in your vehicle. 
  • Materials will be brought to your vehicle.
  • No Chromebooks will be distributed at this time. If you require a Chromebook, please contact the main office for assistance.
  • We will not designate times for class sections for this pick-up (all families are welcome to come when it is most convenient within the scheduled time).
