Room Parent Collections for Holiday Gifting

Have you seen a message from your room parents collecting funds for staff gifts? At the start of the year, our room parent coordinators brainstormed ideas for creating a gift-giving process that would be more inclusive of those staff members who aren't classroom teachers, but who also pour their hearts, talents, and time into supporting our students. The lovely idea of pairing support staff with a classroom teacher was born!

While giving is *always* voluntary and never expected, know that your classroom teachers AND your adopted support staff (paraeducators; building maintenance workers; art, phys ed, and music teachers; ESOL teachers; special education teachers; and administrative staff to name a few!) will appreciate your thoughtfulness in any amount or form. And we appreciate the thoughtfulness of our room parents as we pilot this new way of sharing the love with all SCES staff!

Photo Retakes on Dec. 14

Picture retake day for SCES is Dec. 14. For those with pre-ordered photos who want a retake, send the whole package back on the day of retake and let your teacher know that you would like a retake. If you didn't participate the first time around, simply let your teacher know in advance that your student will attend photo retake day.

News from MCPS

Three Early Release Days Added

At their December 2, 2021 meeting, the Board of Education altered the 2021-22 school calendar in a few ways, the most important being that they added three new early release days: January 12,  March 24, and May 18. Mark you calendars!

Free ESL Classes for MCPS Parents

The Literacy Council of Montgomery County is offering free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for MCPS parents. The classes will be held virtually and there will be options for all levels of English speakers. They are available to any MCPS parent for whom English is not their first language. Parents should complete this interest form to receive a placement test.

COVID Test to Stay

The Test-to-Stay program will allow students who are close contacts of a positive COVID-19 case and are not wearing masks during the exposure, such as during periods of eating and drinking, to come to school and take rapid COVID-19 tests for five days. As long as the rapid tests are negative, these students would be allowed to attend their classes. The program will begin in a limited number of schools and expand to more schools in the coming weeks.
