Annual Book Share Call for Volunteers

The Annual SCES Book Share is happening now: June 1 and 3 / June 7 and 8 (to cover A and B weeks for in-person students).

Virtual students are invited to stop by school from 5-7 PM on June 1 or June 3 to pick out a book.*

We still need a few volunteers to help students "shop" for books. All of the books are free and the students really light up knowing they can pick a few books to take home!  Please sign up for one or more shifts here (link also pasted below).

*Virtual students can pick up their World Culture Day packets during the evening hours of the Book Share.

Summer School FAQ

Joe Shashaty, our MCCPTA delegate, created an FAQ regarding summer school (updated on Friday, May 28). Please find it on the PTA website here:

https://scespta.membershiptoolkit.com/summerschoolfaq

After reading the FAQ, additional questions may be directed to Yasmin_M_Perkins@mcpsmd.org; please consider copying Joe Shashaty at joe@shashaty.net, for later inclusion in the FAQ on our PTA site.

World Culture Day is a Sligo Creek Elementary School tradition that enriches our students' awareness of their classmates and the world. This year we'll explore the cultures of Burundi, Greece, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Poland, Venezuela, and Vietnam.

Join us for music, art, geography, language, and more!

Additionally, each SCES student will receive a handout about culture from Ditto Kids magazine (an incredible resource created by a SCES parent!), which aims to broaden awareness about different people and cultures. Virtual students are invited to stop by school from 5-7 PM on June 1 or June 3 to pick up their World Culture Day packets.

End-of-Year Gifts to Staff

As the school year comes to a close, the PTA is suggesting a different approach to this year's end-of-year class gifts.

Please consider using the link below to contribute to a collective SCES staff giftthe refurbishment of the staff lounge for the 2021-2022 school year.

The lounge needs new appliances, updated furnishings, paint and decor, and some general TLC.

We hope to make class gifts more equal across SCES between FI, Academy, and other staff who work so hard all year long.

Please consider giving here if you're able: https://scespta.membershiptoolkit.com/form/m/142444

SPEAKING OF WHICH...

Are you an interior designer, organizer, or stager (aspiring or pro)?

We're wondering if there might be a generous individual in our SCES community who would be willing to take a look at the Staff Lounge and give us a few tips for making the space more welcoming.

If that person is you, please contact Rick at president@scespta.org or Brenna at communications@scespta.org.

5th Grade Memory Book Pick-Up on June 11 from 4-6 PM

On Friday, June 11, from 4-6 pm, all 5th graders are invited to celebrate the end of the school year and to pick up their memory books outside at SCES.

We'll have a backdrop for photos, and your 5th grade teachers will be present to cheer you on as you get your memory books, take photos, and celebrate safely together. (Masks required.)

If 5th grade families would like to help out with music, food, and decorations, please contact Katie Stauss at katiestauss@gmail.com. Any donation is appreciated (by Monday, June 7 please), but contributions are *not* required.

If you can't attend the memory book pick-up and celebration on June 11 (fingers crossed that you can!), we'll be sure to get every graduating student a book in class or by delivery, porch pick-up, or mail.
