Annual Book Share Call for Volunteers & Books

The Annual SCES Book Share will take place June 1 and 3 as well as June 7 and 8 (to cover A and B weeks). In-person students will choose a book to take home while they are in school.

Virtual students are invited to stop by school from 5-7 PM on June 1 or June 3 to pick out a book.*

  • Volunteers will help students "shop" for books. All of the books are free and the students really light up knowing they can pick a few free books to take home!  Please sign up for one or more shifts here (link also pasted below).

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4ea5a92e5-2021

  • For the book share to be a success, we need your gently used books. Please drop them off in the bin outside of school or contact Susie at 301-455-4487 for a pick-up if you have a bag or box or more to donate.

  • You can purchase used books to donate from thrift stores (Value Village and FOLMC bookstore in Rockville.) Graphic novels and series books are always popular. You may also consider buying new books from our local Black-owned bookstore, Loyalty Books (www.loyaltybookstores.com), to help make sure we are offering as diverse a selection of books as possible to excite our students and reflect their living experiences (or expose them to new worlds!).

*Virtual students can pick up their World Culture Day packets during the evening hours of the Book Share.

Summer School FAQ

Joe Shashaty, our MCCPTA delegate, kindly coordinated with Principal Rand and Ms. Perkins to create an FAQ regarding summer school. Please find it on the PTA website here:

https://scespta.membershiptoolkit.com/summerschoolfaq

After reading the FAQ, additional questions may be directed to Yasmin_M_Perkins@mcpsmd.org; please consider copying Joe Shashaty at joe@shashaty.net, for later inclusion in the FAQ on our PTA site.

World Culture Day 2021

Friday, June 4, 2021   |   2:00 - 2:45 PM

Zoom Meeting:

https://zoom.us/j/91367620497?pwd=andZRlNCTUdEMkhVMmMrVTRqYXpYdz09

Meeting ID: 913 6762 0497

World Culture Day is a Sligo Creek Elementary School tradition that enriches our students' awareness of their classmates and the world. While this year's event will differ from the full-day experience of a typical school year, we'll Zoom in to take a trip around the world, exploring the cultures of:

  • Burundi

  • Greece

  • Guyana

  • India

  • Jamaica

  • Poland

  • Venezuela, and

  • Vietnam.

Join us for music, art, geography, language, and more!

Additionally, each SCES student will receive a handout about culture from Ditto Kids magazine, created by a SCES parent, which aims to broaden awareness about different people and cultures. Several complete issues of Ditto Kids will be in each classroom at Sligo Creek and available in the media center. Virtual students are invited to stop by school from 5-7 PM on June 1 or June 3 to pick up their World Culture Day packets.

End-of-Year Gifts to Staff

We often think about gifts for our teachers and staff as the school year comes to a close.

The PTA is suggesting a different approach to this year's end-of-year class gifts.

Please consider using the link below to contribute to a collective SCES staff giftthe refurbishment of the staff lounge for the 2021-2022 school year. The lounge needs a new microwave, updated furnishings, paint and decor; and possibly a new refrigerator with a hook-up to a water line to allow for water and ice to be dispensed.

We hope to make class gifts more equal across SCES between FI, Academy, and other staff who work so hard all year long.

Please consider giving here if you're able: https://scespta.membershiptoolkit.com/form/m/142444
