MLK Week of Service: the Great Kindness Challenge

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

Instead of one day of service, MCPS schools celebrate a full week of service this year, with activities scheduled for each day of this week.

Yesterday's activity was to explore books and videos about the Civil Rights Movement and about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as to reflect on how brave and important the Civil Rights leaders were.

Families are also encouraged to pursue volunteer activities that can be done at home.

Parent Connection and Action Series - Jan. 25 @ 8 PM

The "Toward an Antiracist SCES" group reignited early last school year with a mission to move our school community along a specific anti-racist continuum.

One of our aims is to build a more connected and cohesive multicultural parent community.

To that end, the Parent Support Workgroup is launching a monthly Parent Connection & Action Series - on the 4th Monday of each month - where we hope as many as possible will join.

New! Parent Connection & Action Series

Fourth Monday of each month:

Jan. 25, Feb. 22, Mar. 22, Apr. 26, and May 24 at 8pm

Via Zoom (for now):

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/4342811114

January 25 topic: the 5-episode* podcast series, Nice White Parents

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/23/podcasts/nice-white-parents-serial.html

*We encourage you to join, whether you've listened to one or all or zero episodes. It's primarily a launching point for a conversation about our own community, the experience of people of color, and what white parents can do differently.

In future months, we hope to enlist parents in the SCES community, many of whom engage professionally in antiracism-focused work, to lead topics and identify local action items. Please reach out with any ideas.

In solidarity,

Alicia Dupre + the Parent Support Workgroup

19 People use BoxTops to Support SCES

As of Jan. 15, 2021 we have 19 people signed up to share BoxTops with SCES.

I admit, I have the BoxTops app on my phone and don't always remember to use it. Even with sporadic scanning, though, I earned around $8 for SCES. Another friend earned $10.20 from two receipts. With more participation, we could collectively add hundreds of dollars (even $1,000+!) to the SCES budget for future assemblies, supplies for students, mini grants to teachers and more.

Here's what you can do to add your dollars and cents:

Scan Receipts for BOX TOPS

1. Download the BOX TOP$ for Education App

2. Select Sligo Creek Elementary School (zip code 20910) when you register.

3.  Scan your grocery receipts within 14 days of purchasing (does need to include total -- does not need to include payment information).

Also...

Sign Up for AmazonSmile:

1. http://smile.amazon.com

2. Sign in with your Amazon.com credentials.

3. Choose Sligo Creek Elementary School as your charity of choice.

4. Start shopping!

5. Add a bookmark for http://smile.amazon.com to make it even easier to return and start your shopping at AmazonSmile.

Turn on AmazonSmile in the Amazon Shopping app:

1. Open the App and find 'Settings' in the main menu.

2. Tap on 'AmazonSmile' and follow the on-screen instructions to turn on AmazonSmile in the App.

Thank you!
